Winter birdwatching (December-February)

Hungary has an extremly continental climate. It means the summer is hot and the winter is really cold. In winter the temperature sometimes drops to –15 degrees and we have 30-50 cm snow. Many kind of birds migrate towards south, the others try to survive the winter in big flocks. From Northen Europe many birds arrive to us so we can find some birds which cannot be seen in other seasons. In towns we can observe the Long eared owls (usually more than 200 birds), on the puszta the Great bustards look for food (sometimes 100 birds together)

Day 1:

We will meet you at Budapest Airport and after a two-hour transfer, we will arrive at your accommodation in Túrkeve. If time allows after your arrival, we will take a walk in Túrkeve and the local area around the house. Birds in the garden of your accommodation often include Great grey shrike , Bullfinch, Hawfinch and Syrian woodpecker.

Day 2:

We take a short walk to see the main local roosting place for the Long eared owl, where at this time of the year there are around two hundreds birds to a flock. With a bit of luck Short-eared owls can be seen as well. After this owl-watching we take a nice walk by the canal, which cross the town. This backwater is an ideal place to find Water rail, Bittern, Bearded tit, Kingfisher and Great greay shrike.

Day 3:

During our tour we will visit the Lake Tisza. This huge lake is a meeting point for thousands of geese and ducks. The great flocks of geese mainly consists of Greylag, Bean- and White-fronted geese, but among the flocks of ducks and geese we can usually find rare birds such as: Lesser white-fronted and Red-breasted geese as well as the Long tailed duck. These tens of thousands of geese and ducks are a very attractive prey for the White-tailed eagles.

Day 4:

Today we will visit the world-famous Hungarian Puszta. During our trip we will visit different grasslands . It is likely we will come across Rough-legged buzzard, White-tailed and Imperial eagles. During our tour we will visit an important place for the Great bustard population, where at this time of the year there are around one hundred birds together.

Day 5:

We will visit probably the most beautiful Hungarian plant collection in Szarvas. Here we can spot the Black, Great, Middle, Lesser spotted and Green woodpeckers and sometimes we can see the Grey-headed woodpecker as well. If we are lucky, during our tour we will see one or two of the Tawny owl, Crossbills and Waxwings too.

Day 6:

We will explore the biggest quarry in the Northeast Hungarian Mountains. Here we look for Alpine accentor and Wallcreeper. In the nearby forest we can admire Grey and Middle spotted woodpeckers. If we are lucky we may find one or two of the Eagle owl and Ural Owl.

Day 7:

If the timing of your return flight allows, we can visit the centre of the local Environmental Conservation Association and see bird-ringing as well.

During our tours we are expected to see 100 different bird species.
